John Marrinan Photography

Bio

I have been taking photos for most of my life.  I started with an instamatic as a kid.  Then I went to a 35 millimeter camera and finally to digital today.

This has not been a smooth ride. During different points in my life my priorities changed.   Priorities that influenced how much time I had to spend with a camera. For the last six or seven years I have been able to spend more and more time looking through the viewfinder.

As a kid the cost of printing photos was very expensive.  I also did not have access to a darkroom.  These two factors made me very selective in what I shot. However, that was when I realized I liked taking pictures of things more than people. I believe this came from the fact that when doing landscapes or a still life I could take the time to really visualize what I was going to shoot. Carefully planning the shot in the viewfinder, rather than just trying to hit the moment, hence saving film.

As you look at, or have looked at, my images you will see images that were shot with a thirty-five millimeter camera, a five megapixel point and shoot, Nikon D70, and my newest piece of equipment a Nikon D 200 SLR.

I don't like flash, but when I shoot a still life I do sometimes use supplemental lighting. The flower pictures you see in the galleries were either shot outside without flash or inside with natural light coming through the window.

Until about two and one half years ago I did not believe I would ever change from film. I was reading a photo magazine and the author talked about how much he liked a digital point and shoot he had picked up. So, I decided to try one as well.

It did not take long and I was hooked on digital. Digital gave me good quality and the ability to do more than I could do in a darkroom and with no chemicals.
